Up, Up and Away!

Posted on November 2, 2021November 2, 2021 By familiesadmin No Comments on Up, Up and Away!

We hope all of the mothers had a wonderful, relaxing day yesterday! This week for our Family Night Plan, we are going to do a fun science experiment that will amaze your children. Let’s get started.

Up, Up, and Away!

Materials needed

Balloons

Empty and clean water or pop bottle

¼ cup of warm water

Baking Soda

Juice of one lemon

Straw

Gather all the materials onto your work space. Gather enough materials for each of your children. Fill each water bottle with ¼ cup of warm water. Pour in 1 tsp. of baking soda into the bottle and stir with the straw until it is dissolved. Pour in the lemon juice and then quickly stretch the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. Have the children pour in the different ingredients and depending on the age help them place the balloon over the bottle. Watch as the balloon starts to inflate. For some added fun, see whose balloon can inflate the fastest.

This a great time to help the kids understand the truly fascinating world we live in. When the baking soda and the lemon juice come together it results in a reaction that is a clear, colorless gas known as carbon dioxide (CO2). As the gas rises up, it inflates the balloon. Explain to the kids that we humans give off CO2 while the plants take in CO2 and exhale oxygen.

Suggested Conversation Starters (these are just ideas and can be altered depending on the ages or developmental stages of your kids)

  1. Ask the children science questions; what makes the balloon inflate, what gas is released when the ingredients are mixed together.
  2. Ask them what kind of science experiments they have done at school and what was their favorite.
  3. Share with them some of the science experiments you may have done in school.
